Introduce Yourself Post 1

Hey guys!

My name is Christopher Cruz, and I am a recent graduate with a bachelors in Environmental Biology. I went to SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, which is an all environmental school located in Syracuse, NY. It was the greatest experience of my life, and got me to become more focused on what I want to do in this field.

North Cascade Butterfly Project

Hey guys, so let me dive right in about my project since I totally forgot my laptop charger and am currently running on 10% power. I will be part of this long-term monitoring program where I will be monitoring butterfly abundances and plant phenology in subalpine meadows of the Cascades Mountains.

Marblemount, Washington Site Location

It’s Chris again, and since I’ve been late with everything, I’ll be posting back-to-back blogs, hehe. When it comes to my site…I just have to say it is BEAUTIFUL! The immense height that these trees reach are jaw-dropping, and I’m sure there are taller trees out there in the world, but coming from New York City, that is not something I get to see every day.

Hey guys!!!

So I finally figured out how to write posts on my phone, since I forgot to bring my laptop charger. Anyway, the second week here in the North Cascades has been incredible. I took an unexpected turn while trying to find my supervisor and ended up finding out about the plant propagation crew and then working with them for the whole week.

As I mentioned before, I ended up working with the plant propagation crew for the week and I loved it! For one of the days, the supervisor told us that we were about to go on an adventure to water some newly planted shrubs located at one of the nearby lakes.

Plants, Plants, and more Plants!

I honestly would have never guessed how much I would be learning about plants in this internship. I was never really a plant guy, but this has opened my eyes to a whole new world.  I know, I know, it seemed obvious, but I never had the push to go out of my way to learn about them until now.

Hey guys!!

I wanted to talk about free time! So as you guys know I’m in the North Cascades, more specifically on the the Marblemount station. It’s honestly in the middle of nowhere and I don’t have a car…so I spend a WHOLE LOT OF TIME on the station. Luckily, I have been able to connect to the almighty internet on my phone to post these wonderful blogs,

Another Great Summer!

Hey guys,

It has been a great summer indeed. This internship has made me certain about my career path as a biologist and has opened my eyes to all the potential jobs that are out there in the field of environmental biology. I have gained a ton of experience in what it means to be a field biologist and, oh boy, there’s so much hiking involved.

The West Coast is so Diverse!

Hey guys,

Living in the North Cascades has really gotten me out of my comfort zone in terms of being so isolated, but it has also gotten me to go out, explore and learn about all the life that is out there. SO, of course I would take an ID book about plants, and I was amazed by how big the book was and how huge the diversity is here in the west coast. There is so much to see and learn, and just in the second day of being out here I swear I learned more than 20 species of invasive plant species. I am in the process of going over the butterflies that I am going to encounter, and all I know is that by the end of this internship I can confidently call myself a butterfly specialist hahaha.

It was the greatest experience of my life, and got me to become more focused on what I want to do in this field. This program has given me the opportunity to experience firsthand what it’s like to work for the National Park Service, which was something I wouldn’t have ever thought of doing. Christopher worked in the North Cascades National Park as a butterfly specialist technician.
