Interpretation and Community Engagement Intern - Manteo, NC

The Intern will be a member of the Division of Interpretation and Visitor Services and will focus on building and strengthening the park’s community ties. The work will center around the Freedmen’s Colony which was established during the American Civil War to shelter escaping enslaved people who started their free lives on the island. Well known for the first attempted English Colony in North America, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site was expanded to interpret the Freedmen’s Colony and the Intern will significantly contribute to furthering the park’s ability to share this story.

The park has an opportunity to make this history come alive and connect the past and present by collaborating with local descendants of the Freedmen’s Colony who possess a strong passion for their heritage. Building upon the 400th Anniversary of Africans in North America commemoration event held last year at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site the Intern will engage with the community and incorporate their voice in what can become a lasting tradition to highlight the relevance of this islands history.

In addition, the Intern will foster a promising partnership with the Jarvisburg Colored School which preserves the history and culture of the Colored People and Schools in Currituck County, North Carolina beginning in 1868 - one year after the Freedmen’s Colony was disbanded. The Intern will develop an informational brochure following the NPS graphics identity program standards that specifically addresses the Freedmen’s Colony. The brochure will be stocked at the park visitor center and provided at the Jarvisburg School.


  • Applicants should demonstrate a genuine interest in history, natural sciences, communications, education, and/or park and recreation management.
  • A strong interest and/or ability to communicate with people of all ages and backgrounds in both formal public speaking roles and informal interpersonal communication.
  • Ability to work well within a team and collaborate with others.
  • Interest in learning how to conduct research on a topic via sound literary resources and/or field observations while being provided guidance in designing an original interpretive program.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Google documents.
  • Experience in Social Media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).
  • Desire to be bold and creative.
  • Possess an ability to conduct community outreach and foster relationships with park partners.

Work Environment:

  • Work is performed both indoors (~60%) and outdoors (~40%).
  • The Intern may need to walk on uneven terrain including sand with minimal elevation change.
  • Indoor work is in an air-conditioned visitor center and office shared with seasonal and permanent interpretive staff.


Driver’s License:

Yes, a driver's license and personal vehicle are required due to the lack of public transportation in the area.
