Youth Engagement Digital Communications Specialist (DHA) -  Boston, MA

This position supports a signature youth employment and development program that will engage up to eight Boston youth (ages 15-18) from urban Boston in exploring their heritage, finding their voices and discovering connections between their own lives and stories associated with the National Parks of Boston (Boston African American National Historic Site, Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park, Boston National Historical Park). Specifically, the candidate selected to fill this RA position will engage youth in explorations and conversations about Boston’s national parks, and document their journeys through recorded interviews, photography, video and written word. The RA will develop and facilitate lesson plans to teach the youth interns video/audio recording and editing. The RA will reach new audiences by sharing teen stories via social media, and will prepare video/audio files for transfer to the Northeastern University’s Archive Collection.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree or pursuing undergraduate degree with course of study in communications, education, media, film making, journalism or photography
  • Ability to capture & provide photographs & image files in high-resolution digital format, incl. RAW files & metadata with identifying information about the photographs & photographer
  • Ability to record & edit videos and audio using Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Familiarity with or desire to learn how to conduct & record interviews
  • Skill at using social media to engage audiences through mixed media & culturally appropriate content
  • Ability to work in partnerships, teams & independently
  • Experience and interest in working effectively with youth
  • Ability to communicate fluently in Spanish and English, orally & in writing desired, but not required
  • Intercultural competence, including the ability to communicate effectively with people who have different worldviews, experiences, perspectives & patterns of communication

Work Environment:

  • The selected candidate is expected to work in the field with experienced NPS educators, supporting place-based park and community explorations with a corps of high school students participating in a summer-long program (Historias de Boston).
  • The LHIP RA will help facilitate youth-centered programming in collaboration with a diverse partnership team made up of NPS educators and park rangers, community leaders (e.g. Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción, Hyde Square Task Force, Boston After School and Beyond).
  • Duties will take place in the field (approximately 3 days/week) and in the office Boston (approximately 2 days/week).
  • Field work involves travel by subway and bus to Boston neighborhoods and park sites on the mainland, and travel by boat to the harbor islands with programs taking place in historic settings (19th century fort); various ecosystems including salt marshes, meadows and tide pools; and under varied climate conditions including high heat, direct sun exposure, heavy winds, rain, etc.
  • Demonstrated stamina for working in mild to extreme field conditions is required.

Driver's License:

Not required but desirable. Park offices and island gateways are readily accessible by public transportation or on foot. Driving is desirable for getting to off-site field locations beyond the city limits (developmental opportunities).
